During this residency period, the selected artists stayed at the K11 artist village in Wuhan, China and created works that involved with knowledge in varies fields to achieve creative thinking. It facilitates the cultural exchange locally at Wuhan and stimulate creation become a part of life.
A strong submission of over 50 applications were received and after a rigorous review process, three practitioners and a research duo were selected for the Programme. They are environmentalist and interdisciplinary artist Carlos Castellanos (U.S.A.); media & performing artist Elena Knox (Australia); architect and artist Hiram Wong (Hong Kong), as well as collaborating artists John Campbell (Ireland, based in Canada), an engineer, and Rebecca Caines (Australia, based in Canada), a sound artist. They had been invited to create works addressing the themes of ISEA2016HK and each took up 6 to 8 weeks residencies at the K11 art village, Wuhan, from January to May 2016, and a group exhibition culminated at the chi K11 art space, Hong Kong on 20 May 2016.
The duo John Campbell and Rebecca Anne Caines led a meaningful activity, called Memory Box on 30 April 2016, in the aims of preserving memories. And on 8 May 2016, there was an improvised performance by using a collection of objects found in Wuhan such as photo, video and audio, in order to let the participants experiences the existence and fading of memories we have in our brain.
The artists evoked the history and memories of the cities to the people, and with a process of art the memories would be archive and reinterpret by the citizens. Together they enjoyed the feast of collective memory.
