Date:19.10.2016 – 15.01.2017
Venue:New Museum, 235 Bowery, New York, NY 10002, USA

Culminating the three-month residency programme, Chinese artist Cheng Ran presents a series of new works in his first US solo exhibition co-presented by the K11 Art Foundation (KAF) and the New Museum. Cheng Ran, working largely in film and video, draws widely from both Western and Chinese literature, poetry, cinema, and visual culture, fabricating new narratives that combine myths and historical events. “Cheng Ran: Diary of a Madman” is on view at the New Museum from October 19, 2016–January 15, 2017.

“Cheng Ran: Diary of a Madman” borrows its title from what is widely considered China’s first modern short story, written by Lu Xun in 1918. As a first-time visitor to the United States, Cheng Ran approaches New York already familiar with iconic and cinematic images of the city, simultaneously intending to find and capture what is typically excluded from such views.

This residency is part of the new partnership between KAF and the New Museum to empower and incubate the talent of artists by facilitating the production of new works and providing opportunities for presentation locally and globally.
