Breaking the Waves

Jac Leirner was born in 1961. She lives and works in São Paulo. She is known for her process of accumulating everyday objects, which she integrates into her sculptures and installations. Leirner has had retrospective exhibitions at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2017), the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh (2017); MoCA, Shanghai (2016); Museo Tamayo, Mexico City (2014); and Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo (2011). Her work was also included in major international art events, including Sharjah Biennial (2015), Istanbul Biennial (2011) and Venice Biennial (1997 & 1990), among others. She was awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and received the Wolfgang Hahn Prize from the Museum Ludwig in 2019.
