Centre Pompidou is hosting two screenings – Performing Dramas I and Performing Dramas II – in partnership with the K11 Art Foundation on 25 May and 29 June 2017. The screenings feature seven young contemporary artists: Tao Hui, Li Ran, Hao Jingban, Li Liao, Fang Lu, Ma Qiusha, and Ming Wong.

Performing Dramas is a programme of the year-round Prospectif cinéma (Cinema of the Future), which focuses on films made by artists of the younger generation within and outside France, providing audiences with an exceptional chance to get up to date with contemporary art and understand the many issues it involves.

Following on from the first session in May, Performing Dramas II presents a selection of video works focusing on performance in the video art of four Asian artists: Fang Lu (b. 1981 in Guangzhou), Li Liao (b. 1982 in Hubei), Ma Qiusha (b. 1982 in Shanxi) and Ming Wong (b. 1971 in Singapore).

In Fang Lu’s No World (2013), the anxiety and aggressiveness of teenagers is staged in a highly dramatic, constructed environment. Next, an act of violence, apparently fortuitous but in fact deliberate, is committed and captured by Li Liao in I Stand by Justice (2015). In Ma Qiusha’s From No. 4 Pingyuanli to No. 4 Tianqiaobeili, the artist, a razor blade in her mouth, talks about her family life and social struggles. Meanwhile, Ming Wong plays several characters in Angst Essen/Eat Fear, a reinterpretation of Fassbinder’s film Angst Essen Seele auf (1974).
