K11 and The New Museum announce new artist residency program

2016年7月4日

Hong Kong-based K11 Art Foundation (KAF) and New York’s New Museum announced today the creation of a new residency and exhibition program aimed at supporting young Chinese artists.

Chosen by the two institutions from over fifty applicants, Hangzhou-based Cheng Ran will be the first artist to take part in the three-month residency program starting in August and culminating with a solo exhibition — Ran’s first in the US — at the New Museum’s Lobby Gallery, due to open on October 19.

After studying at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Ran produces film and video works drawing widely from Western and Chinese literature, poetry, cinema, and visual culture. He is represented by Shanghai gallery LEO XU Projects.

The non-profit organization KAF, founded by Adrian Cheng in 2010 to support the development of Chinese contemporary art from Greater China, has run a number of residency programs and supported major productions internationally over the last five years. Earlier this year, KAF joined forces with Paris’ Centre Pompidou and announced the launch of a three-year partnership with the French institution, the collaboration focusing on the development of the Centre’s research program on the Chinese contemporary art scene — a project led by former M+ curator Yung Ma.

“This new partnership expands the New Museum’s commitment to supporting the best emerging art from around the world and our network of international collaborators” New Museum director Lisa Phillips commented.
