2 is a sculpture created by Swiss artist Urs Fischer, who is best known for creating large-scale sculptures and installations that explore the processes of material creation and destruction. For this work, he first fashioned a clay model—a nude, headless female body lying on a divan—and removed chunks of the material afterwards. The ragged, formless lumps were then cast in bronze along with the figure, which Fischer later painted on. The act of making and moulding, of allowing the state of material to change, manifests the tension between permanence and impermanence.
